Hello Friends!
Here is this week's issue of The Synod Connection.
Also, due to a wedding in the family, I won't be in the office on Friday. I will be printing up the bulletins Wed.

CHURCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (CDC)
CDC
provides emergency grants to Presbyterian Churches in flood ravaged
areas. Six churches receive funds to disperse to their members with the
greatest needs.
At
its July 19 meeting, the Board of Directors of Church Development Corporation
authorized $12,000 in Emergency Grants to six Presbyterian Churches in
communities affected by the recent flooding. The funds will be disbursed
by the churches themselves to their members whose lives have been affected by
this natural disaster. Those churches are: First Presbyterian
Church, Iola, KS., Coffeyville Presbyterian Church, Coffeyville KS., First
Presbyterian Church, Independence, KS., First
Presbyterian Church, Chanute, KS., Neodesha Presbyterian Church, Neodesha, KS.,
and First Presbyterian Church, Osawatomie,
KS.
While
the CDC Small Church Grant program has typically been used for more traditional
“bricks and mortar” needs at Presbyterian Churches themselves,
President David Hintz said that the Board of Directors felt this situation
merited special attention.
“When
fellow Presbyterians are hurting, we all feel the pain,” said
Hintz. “The Board wanted to go beyond what we have done in the
past, because this situation was so devastating to so many families in
communities with Presbyterian Churches.”
Board
Chairman Jim Madson, of Kirkwood,
MO., agreed. “The
Board wanted to help in any way that we could,” he said. “We
realize that these funds will only be a fraction of what is needed, but we want
the families in those communities to know that we support them, and are praying
for them.

VOLUNTEER WORK TEAMS – U. S.
Midwest
There have been numerous calls asking if volunteers will be needed to
help with clean-up and rebuilding efforts related to the Midwest
floods. Currently, several members of the Presbyterian Disaster
Assistance (PDA) National Response Team are working with the affected
presbyteries and one area being addressed is the use of volunteers.
Although specific volunteer opportunities have not be identified at this time,
PDA is asking interested work team leaders to register their teams online at http://www.pcusa.org/pda/register/team.jsp
. Should volunteer opportunities be identified, team leaders will be
notified with details of work that needs to be done, accommodations available,
and other information to help the team make an informed decision. All
teams that register will be contacted within a two-week period.
HURRICANE DEAN – MEXICO
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has heard from the leadership of
the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico and learned that they have been in
touch with the Presbyteries in the area impacted by Hurricane Dean. Most
affected by the hurricane were the poor communities. Most of these homes
in these communities were of simple wood and mud construction. These
communities subsist on agriculture and have lost much of their harvest.
PDA will be providing support to the church as they prepare a plan and budget
for the response. Gifts may be designated to Mexico - DR000015.
