FIRST THINGS FIRST

There are not enough words to express how much I appreciate you all and what
you all did yesterday for the installation service. Thank you! Despite the
length, it was one of the best installations I have had since my ordination.
Thank you, again.

REMINDERS:

We are the Public Safety building this Sunday across from the YMCA.

Xmas Eve - We are at the Franklins for the Vigil of the Nativity, which
begins at 6 pm. Come early (5-ish) for simple food and fellowship; stay
until Santa comes (just kidding).

Xmas Party When: Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007, 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm
Where: Robbie and Jessie's house, 170 Berringer Dr., O' Fallon, Il (Crown
Pointe Subdivision off North Lincoln)
>From 6:00 to 8:00 will be the pre-caroling party. Robbie and Jessie will be
serving appetizers and drinks. If anyone were to bring Christmas cookies
they wouldn't mind a bit!
We will board a bus at 8:00 and head for the Shrine to view the Christmas
lights. We will sing Christmas carols along the way.
We will need to know if you are coming so that there is enough food and
enough room on the bus. Please RSVP to the church office or to Robbie at
628-7828 by Dec. 7.

Xmas Party with the United African Presbyterians is on the 15th at 1 pm.
Anyone interested in going and meeting our sisters and brothers again,
contact me or Gerry and we will also consider carpooling.

SCRIPTURE for SUNDAY: Isaiah 11:1-10 (Message translation)

1-5 A green Shoot will sprout from Jesse's stump, from his roots a budding
Branch.
The life-giving Spirit of God will hover over him,
the Spirit that brings wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit that gives direction and builds strength,
the Spirit that instills knowledge and Fear-of-God.
Fear-of-God
will be all his joy and delight.
He won't judge by appearances,
won't decide on the basis of hearsay.
He'll judge the needy by what is right,
render decisions on earth's poor with justice.
His words will bring everyone to awed attention.
A mere breath from his lips will topple the wicked.
Each morning he'll pull on sturdy work clothes and boots,
and build righteousness and faithfulness in the land.

6-9The wolf will romp with the lamb,
the leopard sleep with the kid.
Calf and lion will eat from the same trough,
and a little child will tend them.
Cow and bear will graze the same pasture,
their calves and cubs grow up together,
and the lion eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child will crawl over rattlesnake dens,
the toddler stick his hand down the hole of a serpent.
Neither animal nor human will hurt or kill
   on my holy mountain.
The whole earth will be brimming with knowing God-Alive,
   a living knowledge of God ocean-deep, ocean-wide.

10On that day, Jesse's Root will be raised high, posted as a rallying
banner for the peoples. The nations will all come to him. His headquarters
will be glorious.

Meditation: The Jesse Tree

Watchword for the Week - Come, let us walk in the light of the Lord! (Isaiah
2:5)

A reminder for the season, "God is personal, not private. . . so is our
discipleship in Christ - it is to be personal, but not private. Otherwise we
worship a differnet God than the one Scripture bears witness to and the one
who very publically came to us as a baby, the one who very publically was
baptized and lived out the faith and life God desires for us, the one who
very publically was crucified for us, and the one who very publically rose
from the dead as the first born of the Resurrection for us. Personal, but
not private. . . so is our calling as disciples of Christ Jesus" (from one
of my old sermons).

Peace,

Cdb +
