Rather than print out the Synod Connection each week, I'll forward it to all of you. You can skim through it. Sometimes there are interesting tidbits.

SYNOD CONNECTION Staying in touch with the wider church and its mission in the world MAY 7, 2007 (For questions, comments or replies to this newsletter, contact Mary Sue Thomas, editor, at maryst at synodma.org) TORNADOES IN THE PLAINS STATES A weekend storm system that killed at least 10 people brought some of the most powerful tornadoes the Midwest has seen in eight years. Greensburg, KS sustained the most concentrated damage from the storm and estimates are that 90 percent of the town of 1,500 was destroyed. One Great Hour of Sharing funds and funds designated for disaster response in the United States are available for immediate disbursement. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance National Response Team (PDA-NRT) member Don Hampton is already in Wichita, and will be joined by PDA-NRT member Bob Houser. They will connect with the Presbytery of Southern Kansas Office and then proceed over to the affect area, connecting with Pastors in the region. There are no Presbyterian Churches in Greensburg, Kansas, but PDA will be engaging with ecumenical and interfaith disaster response efforts. Contributions for this area may be sent through normal giving channels marked DR000015. COALITION OF IMMOKALEE WORKERS’ AGREEMENT The Office of General Assembly has sent the following information from Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, Stated Clerk of the General Assembly, Ms Linda Valentine, Executive Director of the General Assembly Council, and The Rev. Noelle Damico, Associate for Fair Food/PC9USA) Campaign for Fair Food: On April 9, 2007 an agreement with McDonald’s Corporation was reached to improve farm workers’ wages and working conditions in the tomato fields of McDonald’s Florida suppliers. This accord builds upon the CIW-Yum! Brands (Taco Bell) agreement of March 2005 and lays the cornerstone for industry-wide change. The Presbyterian Church teaches that God has entrusted us as stewards of all creation, which includes our economic life. Rather than accept existing arrangements of commerce, Presbyterians believe we have a responsibility to change systems of commerce so that they more fully reflect God’s intention of well-being for all. Now that McDonald’s and Taco Bell have lent their substantial weight to making changes happen, we pray that the rest of the industry will not be far behind. At this time Burger King has declined to work with CIW. Resources on the Campaign for Fair Food including worship, educational and take action materials may be found at www.pcusa.org/fairfood. 2007 NATIONAL ELDERS CONFERENCE The conference will be held August 29-31, 2007 in Nashville, TN. The Office of the General Assembly and the General Assembly Council are sponsoring this first national training and networking event for some of the most important leaders in the Presbyterian Church (USA) --- the elders in congregations. It hoped this will become a regular biennial event in the life of the church. Visit www.pcusa.org/eldersconference for details. Visit www.synodma.org for an on-line edition of Presbyterianews, upcoming events, printable registration forms, the current Synod Calendar, Synod Committee members, Ministry partners, and much more.
